WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. . .
HOMELESSNESS IN ENGLEWOOD

Our speaker this week will be Mike Sandgren, who is part of the Homeless Initiative in Englewood. We'll hear about not just the problems but the proposed solutions to conditions that have worsened in recent years.

The Englewood Herald has been doing a great job of covering the issue. Here is a link to one of its stories:

You can find more at englewoodherald.net.

Many of you met Jerry and Ann Healey at our wine-tasting event (and last year's). They own the Herald and about 20 other suburban Denver papers.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT ED

Hey Englewood Rotarians,

Our club participated in the Englewood Community Cup golf tournament fundraiser on Sep 28 along with Englewood Lions Club and the Greater Englewood Chamber. Bruce will announce results soon. Thanks to all who participated.

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) courses begin Oct 13 at Red Rocks Community College. Cost is $40, to be reimbursed by the club. To register, contact Karen Briggs at briggs129@comcast.net or 303-919-0819.

Our Happy Hour this month is at Zane’s Italian Bistro, 8101 E Belleview Ave, Denver 80237, 6-8 PM.  If you plan to attend, please sign up at our Wed regular meeting, as restaurants appreciate a reasonable head count. Spouses are of course welcome.

Action Committee members and interested other members please meet at Ed’s house Tue Oct 9, 6:30 PM.  Agenda will include (1) results of actions taken after last meeting Aug 7; (2) post-mortem on winetasting fundraiser; and (3) how to grow our club’s membership. Appetizers and wine will be served.

To attend the Englewood C of C Annual Service Club and Community Leaders Luncheon on Oct. 30, RSVP to Patty. The $20 cost will be paid by the club. (Note from Patty: We're honoring Ed as Rotarian of the Year, so y'all come!)

ROTARY EDUCATION
All about Youth Exchange

With Centennial Rotary we are co-hosting Raphael Schmidt, a student from Switzerland, this year. He's currently staying with the Dows from our club, but will move twice later in "his year."

Mike Dow will give you an update on the exchange this week. Hint: Raphael, who had never before played football but was a fan, played on the Cherry Creek VARSITY football team last week. Whoo-hoo!

Here are some facts from RI about the value of Youth Exchange:

Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace
one young person at a time.

Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students 15 to 19 years old are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries. (Englewood Rotary sponsored Natalie Dow last year -- an amazing experience in Peru.)

What are the benefits?

Exchange students unlock their true potential to:

  • Develop lifelong leadership skills
  • Learn a new language and culture
  • Build lasting friendships with young people from around the world
  • Become a global citizen
